Hon. Andrew Powell MP GAICD, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation
Andrew Powell is the Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation, a proud father of five, and the local Member for Glass House, an electorate that covers the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay.
Mr Powell completed secondary school at Redcliffe and was awarded degrees in Science and Arts at the University of Queensland.
He worked with the Defence Department in Canberra, and after working overseas returned to Queensland where he worked for the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Child Safety.
He was elected as the Member for Glass House in 2009 and was appointed Minister for the Environment from 2012 to 2015. He’s served in a range of positions since including as Manager of Opposition Business from 2022 – 2024. Andrew was appointed Minister in November 2024.
Mr Powell is passionate about nature-based tourism, and encouraging Queenslanders to see our great State so they become ambassadors for all we have to offer. Having studied science, he knows the invaluable contribution of the scientific community to our everyday lives, and the incredible potential for innovation to transform the way we work, live and play.
As Tourism Minister he is committed to promoting all Queensland regions but says everyone should check out his electorate of Glass House, multiple times, as it’s unquestionably one of the State’s best destinations.

His passion lies in strengthening societal norms around personal responsibility for waste and community well-being. Based in Stockholm, Joakim brings both strategic insight and hands-on experience to discussions on future waste resources. When not working to create cleaner public spaces, he enjoys skiing, cooking, and exploring culinary experiences.
Kristen Burey - Associate, HWLE Lawyers
Kristen is an Associate in the Environment & Planning practice group at HWLE in Brisbane. She has broad experience in environmental advice and litigation.
Natalie Churn - Assistant Director, Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water
Natalie is an Assistant Director at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, in the team that regulates the import, handling and trade of ozone depleting and synthetic greenhouse gases. Natalie is passionate about addressing challenges in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, promoting technician training in emerging technologies and engaging with people that work directly in the HVAC&R industry who are passionate about how their sector can contribute to environmental sustainability.
Trevor Evans - Interim CEO, COEX
Trevor Evans is the Interim CEO of COEX, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Containers for Change. Mr Evans has previously served as CEO of the National Retail Association, the Federal Member for Brisbane and was Australia’s first dedicated minister for recycling, waste and sustainability. Mr Evans has brought his economic and environmental policy expertise to a range of board and advisory body roles. He holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Queensland.
Mason Grave - Technical Manager – Environmental Services, Pure Environmental
Mason Grave is the Technical Manager of Environmental Services (QLD) at Pure Environmental and a Chartered Chemist with Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Mason holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Sydney and has spent more than half a decade across the east coast of Australia ensuring adherence to environmental regulations. His desire to promote a circular economy of hazardous resources has helped foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within high-risk environments. Driven by a zero-harm philosophy, Mason focuses on leveraging technical oversight to enhance operational efficiency, ensure industry-leading compliance, and realise the full environmental and commercial potential of safe chemical management.

Alex Kanaar - Director of Strategic Projects - Ecological Transformation, Veolia
Alex Kanaar is Director of Strategic Projects – Ecological Transformation at Veolia, bringing 17 years of waste and resource recovery leadership across Australia. A former Wallabies rugby player, Alex combines strategic thinking with technical expertise, having secured landmark projects including the recent $107M ACT Materials Recovery Facility and major municipal waste processing contracts across Sydney and Queensland. With qualifications spanning behavioural health science, natural resources management, and operational excellence, Alex specialises in integrated waste infrastructure development, circular economy solutions, and complex contract negotiations that deliver sustainable outcomes for councils and communities.

Robert Kelman has worked across the resource recovery in packaging policy reform, container deposit schemes for the past 20+years, and is Executive Officer of the Australian Tyre Recyclers Association.
Brett Lemin – CEO, Waste Contractors & Recyclers Association of NSW
Brett Lemin has extensive experience across the private and public sectors in various industries including Waste, Resource Recovery and Education. He has a strong background in the environmental and sustainability industry sectors through previous roles he has held and dealt with tenders and contract management. He has significant experience working with NGOs, legislators, regulators, various statutory authorities and research institutions.
Kali Martin - General Manager Organic Recycling and Environmental Services, Pure Environmental
Kali Martin is the General Manager of Environmental Services at Pure Environmental and Chair of the Australian Organics Recycling Association. With a B.Sc. in Chemistry from The University of Queensland and over a decade in environmental and technical roles, Kali brings deep expertise in compliance, resource recovery, and sustainable waste solutions. She leads initiatives to reduce landfill reliance and environmental risk through innovative recovery pathways, advocating for industry collaboration and policy reform to strengthen Queensland’s circular economy.

A Civil Engineer with an MBA, Michael has held senior operational and strategic roles across Swire SITA in Hong Kong and SITA Australia in Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.
For the past decade, he has led Waste and Resource Recovery Services at Rockhampton Regional Council, where he brings deep strategic and technical insight, commercial acumen, and a passion for innovation in the circular economy and resource recovery sectors.
David Petrie - General Manager, Soft Landing
David Petrie is the General Manager of Soft Landing, one of Community Resources’ social enterprises. He is responsible for the successful running of this unique enterprise, delivering strong outcomes for people and Country. David is an experienced business professional with a successful career in private enterprise, holding senior roles at companies including Alsco, Goodyear/Dunlop Tyres, Electrolux Home Products, and Dairy Farmers. Before joining Soft Landing, he was the General Manager of Kingsley Enterprises, a subsidiary of ARB Corporation. Motivated by his values of respect, fairness, compassion, and kindness, David transitioned into the not-for-profit sector to apply his business management skills to create meaningful social and environmental impact.
Flynn Rush - Senior Associate, HWLE Lawyers
Flynn is a Solicitor in the Environment and Planning practice group at HWLE Lawyers in Brisbane. He has broad experience in litigation and the provision of legal advice in relation to planning and environment law.
